What Is Medicare?

At times, there is confusion when it comes to Medicare. Our job is to bring clarity to the process, making it as simple as possible for you to get the coverage you need.

Let’s start with the basics.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that was created in 1965 under the Social Security Administration. Now administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, these benefits are enjoyed by over 60 million people in the United States.

Who Is Eligible?

In order to qualify for Medicare, you must either be a United States citizen or a legal resident. Legal residents must live in the U.S. for at least five years in a row before enrolling in a program. Here are some additional qualifying factors:

At MedicareCU, we work specifically with eligible individuals who are members of our partnered credit unions. This relationship creates bonds of trust between all parties.

What is Covered?

The health benefits provided by Medicare are extensive. Put simply, coverage can be generally divided into two parts (parts A and B):

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Benefit)

Part D is the Medicare plan that covers most outpatient prescription drugs. This can be offered through private companies as a stand-alone option or can be included as part of a more comprehensive Medicare plan. Such Medicare plans that include prescription drug coverage are known as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans. With the proper MAPD plan, you don’t need to be concerned with a separate Part D plan.

The coverage above is generalized. Medicare coverage is based on federal and state laws as well as other decisions made both locally and nationally. To learn more about your specific coverage options, contact one of our trusted agents at no cost.

Cost of Care

Medicare does come at a cost. It isn’t free. However, for many, it is the most affordable option. The amount paid largely depends on the coverage you choose. This can be discussed in detail during enrollment.

Medicare Supplement Insurance

Original Medicare covers many of the costs associated with your medical care— but not all of them. For this reason, many of those enrolled in a Medicare plan also opt for Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap). This coverage is provided by private companies and can help with remaining health costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. At MedicareCU, we help individuals find the best coverage options possible which often include Medigap solutions.
